Not your typical “manager” job

As a Duty Manager, you’re right in the middle of everything. One minute you’re helping guests, the next you’re supporting your team or stepping in when things get busy. You’re not stuck behind a desk- you’re out on the floor, keeping things running smoothly. It’s where you learn the most. See Ella’s day as a Duty Manager at Premier Inn.

Meet some of our Duty Managers

Jordan | Duty Manager

“If the 16 year old me could see me now she definitely wouldn’t believe it! From Housekeeper to Ground Floor Team Member to Duty Manager and now Hotel Manager, I’ve done nearly every role in this hotel. If you were to cut me – I’d bleed purple!

“The Team and Management are what really make it. SO many people back you and I wouldn’t be where I am today without that.”

- Jordan, Hotel Manager

Oshane | Duty Manager

“A typical shift? I’d say it’s movement. I’m on the floor with the team, checking guests in, supporting the restaurant and bar, solving problems before they grow. My job is simple to explain and harder to master: make sure guests are looked after and the team has what they need to deliver.

“My next aim is to be a Hotel Manager. But progression also has to work around life. I have a young daughter, so I prefer morning shifts during the week to pick her up from school. Weekends, I’ll take evenings. My managers support that balance. It means I can build a career without sacrificing being present at home.

That matters.”

- Oshane, Duty Manager

Callum | Duty Manager

“Before this job, I worked in hospitality, but not in a way that felt like a career. Nightclubs, quieter sites, places where you showed up, did your shift and went home. I wanted something more structured. Something where I could learn properly and build towards something bigger. That’s what brought me here.

As a Duty Manager, you work in every department – reception, housekeeping, breakfast, back-of-house admin. One day you’re checking guests in, the next you’re helping make beds or supporting the food and beverage team. You’re the point of contact when something happens and the person who keeps things moving when it’s busy. That variety is exactly why I enjoy it. I like understanding how the whole hotel works, not just one part of it. You learn what each role actually involves, where the pressure points are, and how to support people properly – because you’ve done the work yourself.”

- Callum, Duty Manager

Day in the life of a Duty Manager

What does a typical day look like...?

Start of shift

Check what's happening in your hotel that day, brief the team on priorities and make sure everyone is set up to give guests a great experience and keep things running smoothly.

During the shift

Stay close to the action, supporting guests and colleagues, solving problems, coaching team members and stepping in wherever you're needed to keep the shift on track.

End of shift

Complete your final checks, make sure any key issues are handed over and leave the next team ready to hit the ground running.

Careers that never stop

This isn’t a role where you stick to one thing.

You’ll support your team, help guests, solve problems and step in wherever needed. Some shifts are busy, some are unpredictable… but that’s where you build confidence and learn the most.

If you like variety and getting stuck in, this is where you’ll thrive.

Take it where you want it to go

Many of our managers started in roles just like this.

As a Duty Manager, you’ll build experience across the whole operation so you get a strong foundation if you want to step into more senior roles.

We’ll support you with training along the way, so you can keep progressing when you’re ready.
