A part time job that's fed my ambitions…
When I started here, my expectations weren’t that high. It was only my second part time job – my first had been making pizzas which was pretty dull. I’d come in, work on a line and you wouldn’t actually speak to anyone all shift.
I was just looking to pick up some money alongside studying for my A-Levels, when I saw the advert to work in the Front of House team. I wouldn’t call this job dull! In fact I’ve learnt skills that I think I’ll use for the rest of my life.
Here, on the restaurant floor, communication is key and it’s brought me out of myself a bit, to be honest.
My dream is to be a Doctor and I’m going to study Medicine at Uni in September. You need to be able to communicate clearly, calmly and I’d say working at Beefeater has definitely helped me with that.
Actually, at the entrance interview for the uni I’m going to, I was able to answer a question on dealing with people with real life experience. I gave the example of when I mixed up an order and how we fixed it as a team, with me liaising with the kitchen, and how we worked together to keep the guest happy.
I work weekends and it suits me at the moment, working around my studies. I enjoy the people – not just the team I work with, but the guests. You meet all kinds of people, it’s great. I like coming to work, seeing who’s in and seeing how a brand new service is going to play out that day.
I’ve only been here for 6 months, but I’d like to carry on for longer when I’m away. I’ve spoken about coming back at Christmas and doing some shifts at my home restaurant and I’m not ruling out moving to a Whitbread restaurant near uni. It’s great that you can move across the UK and still keep doing the job, but first I want to see what the demands of uni are!
