Earning while you’re learning. When people talk about apprenticeships that’s the kind of thing you’ll hear. But is that really enough? Learning, yes. Earning, yes: with the same pay as your team mates from Day One.

But what about taking responsibility, gaining confidence, developing life skills and being motivated to do more and progress in a permanent job that doesn’t end when your apprenticeship is served? Now that’s a proper apprenticeship.

Who are we

So, we’ve been around since 1742. Obviously, we were a bit different back then, but at the same time there are some things that have never changed. For 280-plus years we’ve played a leading role in one of the world’s most exciting industries – hospitality. In fact, you could say we’ve helped shape it.

All 35,000 of us at Whitbread have our reasons for loving hospitality. It might the chance to create memorable experiences for our customers. It might be the chance to meet and interact with new people every day. It could be the opportunities you have to move roles and locations. Or chance the keep learning and developing. Then again it could be the security that working here brings, or the fact that we’re open to discussing when and where you work (within reason, obviously). Whatever your reason, we’re pretty confident it won’t take you long to find it.

Your development

Deciding where to enter the world of work is a big decision. Naturally, your eyes may be set on those first few days and weeks. We think it’s worth considering the bigger picture too, though. Like, ‘where is this apprenticeship going to take me?’ Well, here it’ll take you to a guaranteed job and a whole host of bigger opportunities within our business.

We’ll get you there through quality training at different stages of your apprenticeship. Supporting you day in day out with whatever help and advice you need. Not only will you learn what it takes to carve out a career in hospitality, but we’ll also bring out qualities you never realised you had. Things like social skills that won’t just benefit you in work, but in your everyday life too. That’s a promise.

The end goal

Simply put, we want you to be part of our future. And we want to be part of yours. So, our apprenticeships have been developed with that in mind. Giving you the opportunities to make the most of today, while keeping an eye on where you want to go when your apprenticeship is complete. When the course is complete your job is still here. 

Support along the way

No one is the same. While all our apprentices may join us excited about getting stuck into a job with real responsibilities, over time you’ll find you all have slightly different motivations and goals. And whatever they are, we want you to reach them.

There’ll be mentoring, training and workshops, plus the everyday support and advice of colleagues. And then, of course, there’s a proper wage that’ll give you financial freedom plus plenty of other benefits that’ll ensure you feel appreciated, rewarded and excited.

Our apprenticeships

Many organisations offer apprenticeships, but we really believe in them. Done properly, they can set people up for life. And, if our apprentices are happy and energised, they’ll do a great job for our customers. Makes sense doesn’t it? Which is why we’re proud to offer apprenticeships for every hourly paid role in our Premier Inn hotels and our Restaurants.

So – assuming you work over 16 hours a week – you can choose to enrol, get paid, and pick up nationally-recognised qualifications along the way. Here’s what’s on offer:

 

The path to follow if you want to learn about all things hospitality. Through structured workshops and on-the-job training, you'll develop the core skills that everyone in hospitality needs, gain that nationally-recognised qualification and enjoy faster progress through our business.

We'll take your raw talent and help mould you into a Grill Chef. On-the-job training and workshops will teach you everything you need to know about succeeding in a professional kitchen environment, while the qualifications are all part of taking you to the next step in your career with us.

Restaurant, Kitchen - Team Member

If you have your sights set on management, this is the apprenticeship for you. Continuous on-the-job training and workshops will develop those people skills and teach you how to supervise and lead in the hospitality business. Complete the apprenticeship and you'll be able to apply for one of our Hospitality Manager Apprenticeships.

Want to run the kitchen? One day you will if you follow this apprenticeship. It’s the pathway for all budding Head Chefs, taking those skills you have up a notch through training and workshops. Learning from the chefs who know what it takes to delight customers, this is a real chance to establish yourself within one of our popular brands.

If you want to run your own Hotel or Restaurant then this is the apprenticeship for you. It’s the route for all our up and coming Hotel Managers and Restaurant General Managers. Whether you work in a front of house role, in housekeeping or in the kitchen we’ll take your leadership skills to the next level through workshops and first-class training.

When it comes to pay, we like to think we’ve got it right. Right from the start, you’ll be on a very healthy wage, but we also make it very clear what you can do to up your pay. For example, as you complete each stage of training, you’ll earn that little bit more. In effect, the more you train, the more you’ll gain. We think that’s a fair deal.

Everyone has other things they want to do in life outside of work, which is why we like shift work. Naturally we can’t just pick and choose when we work, but it does give us a degree of freedom that lets us commit to those other commitments we all have.

Your hours

From day one, you can expect to work and train at the same time, giving you the best possible blend of on and off the job learning. What hours you work will depend on the vacancy you apply for, and will always be committed to by us in your contract.

Your work environment

You'll see and hear us talk about family quite a lot. But that's what we strive for and that’s what it feels like. Working (hard) alongside people who genuinely care for each other, have a laugh with each other and almost certainly become good friends with one another. There’s no real secret to it. We just make sure we hire good people who enjoy working towards the same goals.

Levels of responsibility

This'll depend on you, your aspirations and your progress. We'll push you to take on more responsibility, but at the same time our trainers will ensure you never feel overwhelmed. Simply put, we work together, and the opportunity to progress and impress is always there.
